Teaching a dog to behave properly and accordingly is as important as teaching your own growing kids about it. Since the dog has become part of your family, and will stay with you in the same house (most probably), it should get some basic trainings in order to stave off any annoying situation.

Teaching an untrained dog/puppy is no doubt an exhausting task. It demands toil and patience to train a dog accordingly.

To make your work easy, we have come up with some very useful techniques on how to teach your dog basic commands.

By following the given techniques, you can bring a world of a difference in your dog’s behavior and make him feel more useful. They are derived in such an easy way that you can do it yourself at home or anywhere.

But, wait! Before we get into the training, let us take some useful pre-tips.

  • ·        Be consistent, and use the same command over and over. Using, COME one day, COME HERE or COME HERE GIRL the other will only confuse the canine.

·        Remember! Dogs have short temper and shorter attention spans. SO, keep the training sessions short.

  • ·        Keep it easyin the beginning and gradually and keep the distractions away at first, and the increase the time span with amount of distraction to teach dog to pay attention.

  • ·        Use Lure – Yummy and delicious food treats can make your work easier Use them after every successful command to encourage the thought that good behavior brings reward.

  • ·        Timely Praise is necessary to let your dog generalize why actually it was for. If you delay your praise, or the treat, the animal would have no idea why he got it for.

  • ·        Keep Calm – Training a dog is an exhausting job, but if you lose your cool and stat yelling at the pup, it will only complicate things and weaken the bond between you two.

Once you’ve gone through mentioned above precautions you can now start learning how to teach your dog.

There are four most basic bit necessary commands every pet dog should learn.

1.      Sit
2.      Come
3.      Stay
4.      Down

SIT: This probably is the easiest obedience command to teach to a dog. Most professionals start dog training with this one.

  • ·        Get down to your knees.
  • ·        Hold a treat close to dog’s nose.
  • ·        Move you hand up to make him follow the treat.
  • ·        This will make his butt lower.
  • ·        Keep the hand up until his bottom touches the ground.
  • ·        Once it touches the floor, let him take the treat he earned and praise him for his first   obedience lesson.
  •
  • ·        Repeat this technique several times. Add the command “SIT” after few days.

Let him master this command, and then ask him to sit before mealtime, before going out for a walk, and as the doorbell rings.

COME-
This command can help to avoid any untoward situation or even save your dog’s life. If he escapes through open door or you lose grip on the leash while walking on the road; you call him back to you and save him from accidents or even from hurting himself or others.
·        Put a tether and a collar on the dog

·        Get down to him, push him with the collar gently and say the command COME!
·        When he gets to you, reward him with affection and a treat.
·        When he begins moving, praise him affectionately and reward him with the treat.
·        Keep repeating it for some days and then remove the leash. Before trying it out, practice it in an enclosed area.

DOWN -
As we progress, there comes one of the difficult commands to teach to a dog as the posture is sign of submission. And submission in dogs does not come naturally. But, you can overcome this hurdle by keeping it positive and relaxed.

·        Take a delicious-smelling treat and hold it with closed fist.
·        Take the treat closer to his snout and let him sniff it.
·        Now, take the hand towards the ground so he follows.

·        Keeping it lower, slide you hand from right to left or vice versa to encourage his body to follow his head.

·        Once he get in the desired position, Say the command aloud ‘DOWN’ and let him have the treat and your affection.

Repeat the exercise over and over. If the dog lunges towards the treat, say a big ‘NO’ and take your hand away.Don’t push him down but encourage every positive step towards the right position.

STAY – Since you have taught your dog to sit, teaching him to stay becomes easier now.
·        Ask the dog to SIT.

·        Open your palm before his muzzle and command “Stay.”
·        Wait for few minutes, and if he stays in the position, he deserves reward.
·        Take some steps back, and give the command again.
·        Keep repeating the technique and gradually increase the number of steps you take before giving ‘Stay’ command.

It might take a little longer to teach this command. The dogs in general are highly energetic and always love to be moving and playing. For them, just sitting and waiting, can be a tough ask as it’s about self-control.
